June Newsletter 2022

Dear Friends and Partners,
It’s been an incredible school year. Now that the 2021/2022 school year is out, our organization takes a bit of a “break” from our day-to-day work with children to regroup, clean up, and plan. It’s always bittersweet, but there is always lots of activity in the center! We’ve had a heavy-duty June already and we aren’t going to let that stop us! Our staff has worked tirelessly to ensure we honor the beautiful space we have been graced with since September 2021. I want to express a special thanks to Monse Zamora who has been with us in the thick of revamping our look, running our Academic Enrichment programming, taking photos, updating social media, and being an overall blessing. She has demonstrated such a level of commitment to ensuring we look good. The transformation of our space has been a lot of work and we truly appreciate the beautiful touches Monse has contributed! Students and volunteers loved working with her this school year. Her handiwork is seen here in our latest Impact Report. Please take a read, enjoy the pictures, and join us as we head into summer camp season 2022! Every year families and children anticipate a great time of learning during the summer. This year, we join together for VBS with our partners Calvary Church of San Mateo, and the Salvation Army. We welcome volunteers to continue to work with children and will make our center available for you to join us Monday-Thursday! Please let us know if you have any questions or just want to join in the fun! We are looking forward to seeing you!
Blessings and gratitude,

May Newsletter 2022

As we head towards Mother’s Day, I am eternally grateful for the gift of motherhood. My life has only been better since God allowed me to be a mother of 2 amazing women. The funny thing is, I’ve been a mother for most of my life. Growing up as the eldest daughter in a single mom home meant that I had the great honor of caring for my siblings from a very young age. Those who know my story have encouraged me to write a book. Perhaps I will (in my spare time). For today, I count it a blessing to be known as “Mama Ang” to many sons and daughters. I wish all Moms the BEST day ever!
YOU ARE LOVED.
Join us this month as we celebrate the completion of the renovations of our new home at 895 2nd Avenue, Redwood City, and our plan to provide summer camp for 50 students! Join our 360 club with a $30/month gift. We are grateful to you for being on our journey!

Easter Celebration

We celebrated Easter with some fun at the AEC, an egg hunt, a viewing of “The Chosen”, and a special service on Sunday morning. Our very own Angie Ibarra Miller delivered the message. We are excited to continue the Sunday gatherings once a month. Our next service will be on 5/22 at 10 am.

We’d love to see you this month!

Sponsor a Summer Camp Student

Summer brings a lot of free time for our students which creates an opportunity for us to help support them. “Summer slide” is a very real and pressing issue for our students as they miss out on dedicated academic support and instruction. Our summer camps allow for them to have fun AND engage in some academic activities to help keep their brains sharp and their imaginations growing.
Most summer camps in Redwood City are $250-$650 weekly. Generations United’s program is $350 per child for a month-long program.

Last year due to covid we hired more staff to manage the program, food, and transportation. The financial help you provide is a huge blessing and bridges the financial gap as we increase to longer hours versus after-school programming. We also welcome more volunteers to join us! We are so excited to partner with Calvary San Mateo again this year. We will also work with Salvation Army! We know it will be a meaningful and joyful experience for all! Please pass the word on to friends, family, and coworkers!

Join us any time!

As we head into the final few weeks of school, we are calling on all volunteers to support our students in finishing the school year strong! We need your help to play games, read, do art projects, and just be present with our students at our AEC. Can you spare an hour or two in the coming weeks?
Our center is open Mon-Thurs from 3-6 pm. Click below for more information.

Miracles Are Happening in Redwood City

October is upon us and we are celebrating Hispanic Heritage month with the best news: the fulfillment of God’s BIG dreams for our community in North Fair Oaks in Redwood City. June, July, and August were a whirlwind of hard work and success with 2 summer programs and backpack drive for 1,000 students in Redwood City! Personally, I successfully became a certified mentor, coach, speaker and trainer for John Maxwell and recorded a podcast telling the GU story. Listen here: Generations United Story
Summer 2019 will go down in the GU history books as one of the most productive and miraculous ever! School started with a bang on August 19th in 2 locations with 55 students. Within a month, we were furthering our discussions with a wonderful church partner to provide a location for our families to expand and enhance our reach into the community!
Effective Tuesday, October 1, we will serve 40 children Monday-Thursday after school at our new location! This is a dream come true after many years of believing for a community outreach center! There is a lot of work to do, but we believe that with everyone coming together, we can see the fulfillment of a community outreach center being fully functional in 2020! Sports, dance, ESL, immigration education, adult classes, music, and mental health services, cross-cultural learning groups are all part of this dream. Although we have a lot of work ahead of us, what hasn’t required that before? It’s going to be wonderful to begin our journey with our academic enrichment center launch on October 1. We are casting the net wide for you to come by this weekend and help us spruce up the space and bring your smiles and gloves! There are a lot of other activities planned in the days to come, including a very special afternoon on Tuesday, Oct. 8 from 4p-6p when volunteers from the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative will join us as we celebrate Hispanic Heritage month!
You are welcome to see our new facility and the wonderful space we are creating for our children and families of the community!

Generations United Camp, Sponsor A Child

Calling out to all our Generations United Family

This summer we embark on an amazing three week Summer Camp adventure serving 65 North Fair Oaks children at a local church. Redeemer Lutheran has opened its doors graciously to a community who is brokenhearted over the closing of their beloved community school in Redwood City! These beautiful children all live well below the poverty level in a city where economic displacement abounds. We have an amazing opportunity to demonstrate love! Join us June 17th through July 5th from 8:30am to 4:00 pm.

This is a dream come true and we are looking for 65 people to invest $350 to provide a scholarship for each of these children participating in GU Camp, consider being a prayer partner, or volunteer! We may not be able to keep their school doors open after June 7th, but we commit to do all we know to ensure they are learning, feel loved, are fed 2 meals, be in community, and get a dose of God’s love in a day when hope is so needed.

Join us on Thursday, June 6th 8:30am to prayer walk around the Redeemer campus.

Our mission is to empower the children and families of Redwood City & North Fair Oaks to reach their full potential…in this generation and the next. This is our hope for Summer 2019.

Sincerely,

Angie Ibarra
Executive Director, Generations United
